Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS)

Mental Health Plans

When you attend a Clinical Psychology or Occupational Therapy session at the Psychology, Trauma & Mindfulness Centre, Medicare will rebate a substantial part of the cost of the session through their Better Access Scheme if you have a Mental Health Plan from your GP or Psychiatrist.

When making an appointment with your GP to discuss whether a Mental Health Plan is appropriate for you, it may be necessary to book a longer session as many GP’s require an extended consultation so that they have enough time to discuss things with you.

If you have a Mental Health Plan, Medicare will rebate up to 6 sessions, followed by further sessions if after review by your Psychologist/Occupational Therapist and GP, your GP believes it would be beneficial for you to have further treatment. Medicare will rebate up to a maximum of 20 Clinical Psychology sessions per calendar year for specified conditions.

A Mental Health Plan can only be made out for an individual, not a family or a couple.

Currently the amount Medicare rebates for the cost of a Clinical Psychology session is $131.65 for a Clinical Psychology session.
You are able to attend the Centre without a Mental Health Plan, but you will not be eligible for the Medicare rebate.

Private Health Insurance

Most Private Health Insurance funds provide a rebate for Clinical Psychology sessions depending on the type and level of cover you have. Private Health Fund rebates can be applied instantly at time of payment for the session. Private Health Insurance rebates and Medicare rebates cannot be used at the same time.

Bulk Billing - not currently available

Bulk Billing is when a Psychologist decides to reduce their standard rate so that a person with a Mental Health Plan is only charged the cost of the Medicare rebate for their session. This means that they do not have to pay any “gap” – where the gap is the difference between the cost of the Clinical Psychology session, and the amount that Medicare rebate, however, bulk billing is not currently available.
